Image Requirements and Specifications

Learning path pictures must meet specific technical requirements to ensure proper display across various interfaces and devices. Following image specifications prevents upload failures and ensures optimal visual presentation.

Accepted File Formats

Learning path pictures support standard web image formats:

  • PNG (Portable Network Graphics): Recommended for images requiring transparency or sharp edges
  • JPG/JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group): Recommended for photographs or images with gradients
  • GIF (Graphics Interchange Format): Supported for simple graphics or images requiring animation

Format selection guidance:

  • Use PNG for logos, icons, or images with text requiring crisp rendering
  • Use JPG for photographic images where file size optimization is important
  • Avoid GIF except for specific use cases requiring animation—static PNG typically provides better quality

File Size Limitations

Maximum file size: 4 MB (megabytes)

Images exceeding 4 MB are rejected during upload with error messages indicating size limits. Large image files should be optimized or resized before upload to meet size requirements while maintaining visual quality.

File size optimization strategies:

  • Resize images to recommended dimensions before upload rather than uploading oversized originals
  • Use image compression tools to reduce file size while preserving acceptable visual quality
  • Convert high-resolution photographs to web-optimized formats with appropriate compression
  • Remove unnecessary metadata, color profiles, or embedded information from image files
  • Test different compression levels to find optimal balance between file size and visual quality

Recommended Image Dimensions

While the system accepts various image dimensions, following recommended specifications ensures optimal display across all interfaces:

Recommended dimensions: 280 × 205 pixels (width × height)

Aspect ratio considerations:

  • The 280 × 205 recommendation provides approximately 1.37:1 aspect ratio
  • Images with significantly different aspect ratios may be cropped or distorted in some displays
  • Maintain consistent aspect ratios across learning path pictures for professional catalog presentation
  • Test picture display in Learner View after upload to verify appropriate rendering

Dimension flexibility:

  • The system accepts images larger or smaller than recommended dimensions
  • Oversized images are automatically resized for display but should be pre-optimized to reduce file size
  • Undersized images may appear pixelated or blurry when scaled up for display
  • Square images (1:1 aspect ratio) work well but may display with some cropping in rectangular containers

Image Content and Design Recommendations

Visual clarity:

  • Use images with clear focal points that remain recognizable at smaller display sizes
  • Avoid images with small text or intricate details that become illegible when scaled down
  • Ensure sufficient contrast between image elements for visibility across different backgrounds
  • Test image legibility in both light and dark interface themes if applicable

Professional presentation:

  • Use high-quality images that reflect organizational brand standards and professionalism
  • Maintain consistent visual style across learning path pictures for cohesive catalog presentation
  • Avoid generic stock photos that don't meaningfully represent learning path content
  • Consider using branded graphics, custom illustrations, or thematic imagery that communicates program focus

Content relevance:
