Creating Quizzes in the Training Module

Quizzes are assessment lessons that evaluate learner knowledge through interactive questions and answers, enabling administrators to verify comprehension, enforce learning milestones, and require passing scores before course completion. Quiz creation involves configuring assessment parameters, organizing questions into groups with display methods that support varied assessment strategies, and designing questions with multiple question types that accommodate different evaluation approaches.

Quiz configuration includes setting passmarks, attempt limits, time restrictions, and result display options that control assessment rigor and learner experience. Question organization through question groups enables structured assessment design with sequential or randomized question delivery, while question type selection supports assessment flexibility through multiple-choice, keyword, free text, file upload, and informational content options that align with diverse learning objectives.

Requirements

To create quizzes, users must be assigned a security role with one of the following permissions:

  • Administrator System Role
  • Access Level: Training Manager, Manage Courses

Prerequisites for Quiz Creation

Before creating quizzes, ensure:

  • Course exists with saved course record
  • At least one chapter is created within course for quiz placement
  • Learning objectives are defined to guide appropriate question type selection
  • Assessment criteria are established including passing requirements and scoring approach
  • You understand question group display methods for optimal assessment strategy

Accessing Quiz Creation

  1. Navigate to the Training module from your portal navigation menu
  2. Click the Courses tab in the primary navigation
  3. Click the course name containing chapter where quiz will be created
  4. Ensure Contents tab is selected (default view)
  5. Locate the chapter where quiz should be added
  6. Click the three-dot actions menu on the right side of the chapter
  7. Select Quiz from Add Content section of chapter actions menu

Quiz Creation Overview

Quiz creation follows two-phase process: initial quiz configuration establishing assessment parameters, followed by question and question group development building assessment content.

Initial Quiz Configuration Phase

Create quiz record with fundamental settings including:

  • Quiz identification (name, language)
  • Assessment requirements (passmark, pass required setting)
  • Attempt control (number of attempts, time limit)
  • Results display behavior (when and what learners see)
  • Review capabilities (pre-submission review option)

Question Development Phase

Build quiz content through:

  • Question group creation for organizational structure
  • Question group display method configuration for assessment strategy

Creating Initial Quiz

Initial quiz creation establishes quiz lesson within chapter and configures fundamental assessment parameters controlling quiz behavior and requirements.

Quiz Creation Workflow

  1. Click chapter actions menu (three-dot icon) on chapter where quiz should be added
  2. Select Quiz from Add Content section
  3. Complete Create New Quiz dialog with required and optional fields
  4. Click Save to create quiz and navigate to Quiz Details page
  5. Click Cancel to discard quiz creation without saving

Quiz Configuration Fields

Name

Required field establishing quiz title displayed in course navigation and learner interface.

  • Enter descriptive quiz name that clearly communicates assessment purpose
  • Use naming conventions consistent with other course assessments
  • Consider including chapter reference or topic indication for context
  • Keep names concise while remaining informative for navigation clarity

Passmark

Required field defining minimum percentage score required for quiz completion and passing.

  • Enter percentage value between 0 and 100
  • Consider appropriate difficulty level for content complexity and audience capability
  • Align passmark with organizational assessment standards when applicable
  • Balance rigor with realistic achievement expectations to avoid excessive failure rates

Language

Required dropdown field selecting quiz content language for interface consistency.

  • Select language matching course language setting
  • Ensure question content will be developed in selected language
  • Coordinate language selection with learner language preferences
  • Use consistent language across all course assessments

Number of Attempts

Optional field specifying how many times learners can attempt quiz.

  • Enter numeric value for limited attempts (1, 2, 3, etc.)
  • Leave blank for unlimited attempts allowing repeated practice
  • Consider assessment purpose when limiting attempts (certification vs. learning check)
  • Balance learning opportunity with assessment integrity requirements

Time Limit

Optional field defining maximum minutes allowed for quiz completion.

  • Enter numeric value representing total minutes for quiz completion
  • Leave blank if time restriction is not required for assessment
  • Calculate appropriate time based on question count and complexity
  • Consider learner circumstances and accessibility needs when imposing time limits

Display of Results

Required dropdown field controlling when and what assessment results learners see.

Options include:

Show results: Learners see complete results immediately after quiz submission including score, correct/incorrect indicators, and question feedback.

Never show results: Learners cannot see results, maintaining assessment confidentiality for secure testing environments.

Only show results if assessment is passed or max attempts are reached: Results displayed conditionally when learners pass or exhaust available attempts, supporting iterative learning while maintaining assessment security.

Only show incorrect answers: Learners see which questions were answered incorrectly without revealing correct answers, supporting learning while maintaining assessment integrity.

Select display method based on assessment purpose, security requirements, and learning objectives.

Pass Required

Checkbox setting determining whether learners must achieve passmark to complete quiz.

Checked (default): Learners must achieve passmark percentage to pass quiz and potentially proceed in course depending on course settings.

Unchecked: Quiz serves as practice or optional assessment without requiring minimum score achievement.

Enable pass requirement for certification assessments, compliance validation, and knowledge verification where mastery is required before progression.

Allow review before final submission

Checkbox setting controlling whether learners can review answers before submitting quiz.

Checked: Learners see all questions and answers before final submission, enabling review and modification before commitment.

Unchecked: Learners submit questions individually or collectively without comprehensive review opportunity.

Enable review for high-stakes assessments where learners should verify responses before final submission.

Quiz Details Page Overview

After initial quiz creation, the Quiz Details page provides comprehensive quiz management interface with question development, settings configuration, and status control.

Quiz Attempt and Time Settings

Number of Attempts

Creating Question Groups

Question groups provide:

  • Display method control for sequential, randomized, or pooled question delivery

Creating Question Groups

  1. Ensure Questions tab is selected in Quiz Details page
  2. Click + Add a Question Group button
  3. Complete question group configuration fields in dialog

Question Group Configuration Fields

Group Name

Required field establishing question group identifier for administrative reference and optional learner display.

Show Group Name

Question Display Methods

Question Display Method dropdown controls how questions within group present to learners, supporting different assessment strategies and learning objectives.

Show All Questions

Displays all questions in question group in sequential order defined by question arrangement.

Use when:

  • Logical question sequence supports progressive difficulty or topic flow
  • All questions require learner response for comprehensive assessment
  • Assessment integrity does not require randomization
  • Learner experience benefits from predictable question order

Show Questions in a Random Order

Displays all questions in question group in randomized order varying between learner attempts.

Use when:

  • Assessment security requires question order variation
  • Preventing memorization of question sequence is desired
  • Reducing cheating through question order difference is important
  • All questions must be answered but sequence is not critical
Note: Info Page question types always display first regardless of randomization setting, maintaining introductory content position.

Use Question Pool

Displays specified number of randomly selected questions from question group, varying question selection between attempts.

Use when:

  • Large question bank allows representative sampling
  • Reducing quiz length while maintaining coverage is desired
  • Creating unique assessment experiences across attempts is important
  • Question count exceeds necessary assessment length

Question Pool Configuration:

Available only when editing existing question group after questions are added.

Number of Questions field specifies how many questions randomly selected from group.

Critical Notes:
  • Do not include Info Page question types in Number of Questions count
  • Info Pages always display first regardless of pool configuration
  • Question pool size must not exceed total available questions in group
  • Random selection varies between learner attempts creating unique assessments

Question Display Method Decision Guide

Select appropriate display method based on assessment objectives and content characteristics.

Choose Show All Questions when:

  • Questions build on each other requiring sequential completion
  • Assessment requires comprehensive coverage of all prepared questions
  • Logical flow enhances learner understanding and performance
  • Question count is appropriate for complete presentation

Choose Show Questions in a Random Order when:

  • Assessment security requires question order variation between attempts
  • All questions are equivalent difficulty and independent of sequence
  • Preventing question order memorization is important
  • Complete question coverage required with order flexibility

Choose Use Question Pool when:

  • Question bank is larger than necessary for single assessment
  • Creating varied assessments from common question pool is desired
  • Reducing learner assessment time while maintaining validity is important
  • Question independence allows random sampling without comprehension loss

Adding Quiz Questions

Questions are individual assessment items within question groups, configured with question type, content, answers, explanations, and scoring that evaluate learner knowledge and skills.

Question Content Configuration

Question Field

Required text field containing question text displayed to learners.

  • Enter clear, unambiguous question text that accurately assesses intended knowledge

  • Avoid trick questions or unnecessarily complex wording that obscures intent
  • Keep questions focused on single concept or skill for clear assessment
  • Consider reading level appropriate for target audience

Question Types and Configuration

The Training Module supports six question types, each serving specific assessment purposes and enabling varied evaluation methods.

Multiple Choice (Single Answer)

Purpose: Assess knowledge through selection of one correct answer from multiple options.

Best For: Factual recall, definition identification, concept recognition, single correct solution problems.

Configuration:

  1. Enter question text in Question field
  2. Click Add Answer to create answer options (minimum 2 required)
  3. Enter text for each answer option in Text fields
  4. Click circle (radio button) beside correct answer to designate correctness
  5. Add additional answer options as needed up to reasonable limit
  6. Reorder answers by dragging answer rows using drag handles

Best Practices:

  • Provide 3-5 answer options for effective assessment (4 is typical)
  • Make incorrect options plausible to require actual knowledge for selection
  • Avoid "all of the above" or "none of the above" when possible for clearer assessment
  • Keep answer length similar to avoid cue patterns
  • Ensure one answer is definitively correct without ambiguity

Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers)

Purpose: Assess knowledge through selection of all correct answers from multiple options.

Best For: Identifying multiple correct elements, comprehensive knowledge verification, multi-factor assessments.

Configuration:

  1. Enter question text in Question field clearly indicating multiple selections required
  2. Click Add Answer to create answer options
  3. Enter text for each answer option in Text fields
  4. Click checkboxes beside all correct answers to designate correctness (multiple selections)
  5. Optionally enable Show answer hint in Configuration section to display correct answer count to learners
  6. Add sufficient incorrect options to create effective assessment
  7. Reorder answers by dragging answer rows using drag handles

Scoring Behavior:

  • Learners must select ALL correct answers to receive credit for question
  • Partial credit is not awarded for selecting some but not all correct answers
  • Selecting incorrect answers in addition to correct answers results in no credit

Best Practices:

  • Clearly indicate in question text that multiple answers are required
  • Enable answer hint when appropriate to reduce confusion about selection requirements
  • Ensure sufficient incorrect options exist to make assessment meaningful
  • Verify correct answer combination is logically consistent and unambiguous
  • Test question in learner view to validate selection behavior

Keyword

Purpose: Assess knowledge through free-text entry of specific keywords or short phrases.

Best For: Terminology recall, definition key terms, fill-in-the-blank assessments, short answer responses.

Configuration:

  1. Enter question text in Question field
  2. Click Add Answer to create acceptable keyword options
  3. Enter each acceptable keyword or phrase in separate Text field
  4. Add all variations of correct answer including:
    • Singular and plural forms
    • Common abbreviations
    • Alternate spellings if applicable
    • Equivalent terms or synonyms

Matching Behavior:

  • System performs exact text matching (case-sensitive by default)
  • Learner response must exactly match one configured keyword for credit
  • Extra spaces, punctuation differences, or case variations may prevent matching

Best Practices:

  • Include all reasonable keyword variations to reduce false negatives
  • Test keywords with sample learner responses to verify matching behavior
  • Consider case sensitivity when configuring acceptable keywords
  • Use keyword questions for terms with limited correct variations
  • Provide clear instructions about expected answer format (single word, abbreviation, etc.)

Free Text

Purpose: Assess knowledge through extended written responses requiring manual instructor evaluation.

Best For: Essay responses, complex explanations, analysis demonstration, application scenarios, critical thinking assessment.

Configuration:

  1. Enter question text in Question field providing clear response expectations
  2. No answer configuration required (manual marking determines correctness)
  3. Optionally configure Question Mark value for question weight in overall score
  4. Provide detailed instructions in question text about:
    • Expected response length
    • Required content elements
    • Evaluation criteria
    • Format requirements if applicable

Marking Requirements:

  • Course administrators must manually review and mark free text responses
  • Learners cannot complete quiz until administrator marks free text questions
  • Administrators receive email notification when quiz with free text questions submitted
  • Marking interface allows score entry and feedback provision

Best Practices:

  • Use free text questions sparingly due to manual marking requirements

File Upload

Best For: Project submissions, document creation, audio/video recordings, screen captures, portfolio evidence.

Configuration:

  1. Enter question text in Question field explaining submission requirements
  2. No answer configuration required (manual marking determines correctness)
  3. Specify in question text:
    • Acceptable file formats
    • File size limits
    • Content requirements
    • Naming conventions if applicable
    • Submission deadlines

Submission Options:

Learners can submit through multiple methods:

  • File upload from computer
  • Audio recording (browser-based)
  • Video recording (browser-based)
  • Screen recording (browser-based, not available on mobile)

Marking Requirements:

  • Course administrators must manually review and mark file upload questions
  • Administrators can request file reupload if submission has errors or quality issues
  • Marking interface includes Instructor's Comment field for feedback
  • Administrators can check "Reupload is required?" to request resubmission

Best Practices:

  • Specify clear file requirements to reduce submission errors
  • Test upload and recording capabilities before assigning quiz
  • Provide file size guidance to prevent upload failures
  • Consider accessibility of recording requirements for all learners
  • Establish marking rubrics for consistent evaluation across submissions

Info Page

Purpose: Provide information, instructions, or context between questions without requiring learner response.

Best For: Section introductions, scenario descriptions, instruction provision, context setting, assessment transitions.

Configuration:

  1. Enter informational content in Question field using rich text formatting if available
  2. No answer configuration required (informational only, no response needed)
  3. Info Page does not contribute to quiz scoring
  4. Use formatting to enhance readability and emphasis

Display Behavior:

  • Info Pages always display first in question group regardless of display method configuration
  • Multiple Info Pages in same question group display in configured order before questions
  • Info Pages excluded from question count in question pool configurations

Best Practices:

  • Use Info Pages to provide scenario context for subsequent questions
  • Include instructions for question group format changes or requirements
  • Keep Info Page content concise to avoid overwhelming learners
  • Consider using Info Pages for assessment section transitions
  • Do not overuse Info Pages as they extend assessment time without scoring contribution

Answer Explanations

Answer explanations provide detailed rationale for correct answers, supporting learning and understanding when displayed to learners based on quiz Display of Results settings.

Explanation Configuration

Available for: Multiple Choice (Single Answer), Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers), and Keyword question types.

  • Show results: Explanations display immediately after quiz submission
  • Never show results: Explanations never display to learners
  • Only show results if assessment is passed or max attempts are reached: Explanations display conditionally
  • Only show incorrect answers: Explanations for incorrect answers display

Explanation Best Practices

Develop comprehensive explanations when:

  • Quiz serves learning purpose beyond assessment
  • Learners benefit from understanding reasoning
  • Corrective feedback enhances knowledge retention
  • Course content reference provides value

Omit explanations when:

  • Assessment security requires answer confidentiality
  • Correct answer is self-evident without explanation
  • Development time is limited and explanations provide minimal value
  • Display settings prevent explanation viewing

Question Configuration Options

Question Configuration section provides additional question settings controlling assessment behavior and presentation.

Show Answer Hint

Checkbox available for Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers) questions only.

Checked: Displays message to learners indicating number of correct answers (e.g., "There are 3 correct answers").

Unchecked: No hint provided about correct answer count.

Use when:

  • Supporting learner confidence in multiple selection questions

Question Mark

Numeric field defining question point value in overall quiz scoring.

Configuration:

  • Enter value between 1 and 100 representing question weight
  • Default value is 1 point per question
  • Higher values increase question impact on overall score

  • Emphasize critical knowledge areas through higher point values

Scoring Calculation:

Total quiz score calculated as: (Points earned / Total possible points) × 100 = Percentage Score

Percentage Score compared to Passmark to determine pass/fail status.

Managing Question Groups

Question groups support ongoing management including editing group configuration, removing groups, and reordering groups within quiz structure.

Editing Question Groups

  1. Click three-dot actions menu on right side of question group
  2. Select Edit from dropdown menu
  3. Modify group configuration fields in Edit Question Group dialog
  4. Click Save to apply changes
  5. Click Cancel to discard changes without saving

Editable Elements:

  • Group Name
  • Show Group Name visibility setting
  • Question Display Method
Note: Changing Question Display Method affects how questions present to learners but does not modify questions themselves.

Removing Question Groups

  1. Click three-dot actions menu on right side of question group
  2. Select Remove from dropdown menu
  3. Confirm deletion in prompt dialog if applicable

Critical Considerations:

  • Removing question group permanently deletes group and ALL contained questions
  • Deletion cannot be undone after confirmation
  • Verify questions are no longer needed before removing group
  • Consider editing group rather than removing when appropriate

Reordering Question Groups

Question groups can be reordered through drag-and-drop for logical assessment flow.

  1. Hover over question group to display drag handle
  2. Click and hold drag handle to begin group movement
  3. Drag question group to desired position in quiz structure
  4. Release to place question group in new location
  5. Question group order updates dynamically reflecting new sequence

Order Impact: Question group order determines sequence in which question groups present to learners during quiz, supporting progressive difficulty or topic-based organization.

Managing Questions Within Groups

Individual questions support editing, reordering, and removal for ongoing quiz maintenance and improvement.

Editing Questions

  1. Click three-dot actions menu beside question (or click question to expand if collapsed)
  2. Select Edit from dropdown menu if using actions menu
  3. Modify question configuration in Edit Question dialog
  4. Update question text, answers, explanations, or configuration options as needed
  5. Click Save to apply changes
  6. Click Cancel to discard changes without saving

Removing Questions

  1. Click three-dot actions menu beside question
  2. Select Remove from dropdown menu
  3. Confirm deletion in prompt dialog if applicable

Deletion Notes:

  • Question removal is permanent and cannot be undone
  • Removing questions does not affect question group continued existence
  • Verify question is no longer needed before removal
  • Consider editing question rather than removing when appropriate

Reordering Questions

Questions can be reordered within question groups through drag-and-drop.

  1. Expand question group to display contained questions
  2. Hover over question to display drag handle
  3. Click and hold drag handle to begin question movement
  4. Drag question to desired position within question group
  5. Release to place question in new location
  6. Question numbering updates automatically reflecting new sequence

Order Considerations:

  • Question order only impacts learners when Show All Questions display method selected
  • Random order and question pool display methods ignore configured question sequence
  • Info Page questions always display first regardless of configured order

Publishing Quizzes

Quiz publication makes quiz accessible to learners, transitioning quiz from development to active assessment.

Publication Requirements

Before publishing quiz, verify:

  • At least one question group exists in quiz
  • At least one question (excluding Info Pages) exists in at least one question group
  • Question configuration is complete with appropriate answers and explanations
  • Quiz settings are appropriate for intended assessment purpose
  • Quiz previewed in Learner View to validate functionality and appearance

Publishing Workflow

  1. Navigate to Quiz Details page for quiz requiring publication
  2. Click Settings tab in quiz navigation
  3. Locate Status dropdown in Quiz Information section
  4. Select Published from Status dropdown
  5. Navigate away from Settings tab to save status change

Publication Impact:

Published quizzes become:

  • Visible and accessible to assigned learners based on course publication status
  • Available in course navigation within containing chapter
  • Subject to completion requirements if Pass Required is enabled
  • Included in course progress calculations

Unpublishing Quizzes

Quizzes can be returned to Draft status when modifications require learner access suspension.

  1. Navigate to Quiz Details page
  2. Click Settings tab
  3. Change Status dropdown to Draft
  4. Navigate away from Settings tab to save status change

Unpublishing Considerations:

  • Learner in-progress attempts may be affected by unpublishing
  • Completed quiz results remain in learner records
  • Consider timing of unpublishing to minimize learner disruption
  • Communicate quiz unavailability to learners when appropriate

Cannot Add Question to Question Group

Refresh browser page if question creation dialog fails to open.

Questions Not Displaying to Learners

Verify quiz status is set to Published in Settings tab.

Confirm course containing quiz is Published and accessible to learners.

Check that question group contains at least one question (excluding Info Pages).

Verify question group display method is configured appropriately for question content.

Review course settings to ensure quizzes are not hidden by course configuration.

Quiz Scoring Incorrect

Cannot Delete Question or Question Group

Verify you have Manage Courses permissions allowing content modification.

Check that quiz is not restricted by sharing settings preventing modifications.

Confirm deletion dialog appears and is not blocked by browser security settings.

Refresh browser page if deletion action fails to execute.

Contact administrator if permissions verification does not resolve deletion issue.

Note: Quizzes can be modified while status is Published. Users assigned to course will not receive notification of quiz changes, so communicate significant quiz modifications to learners when appropriate.
